Rubber Stamping: From Maya Indians to Scrapbooking

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Kathy Williams Who would have thought that your scrapbooking and card making had a connection to the Maya Indians? Rubber Stamping is certainly one of the fastest growing hobbies today, and for good reason. With its inexpensive materials and creative versatility, rubber stamping provides millions with hours of fun and creativity. How did it all start? Spanish explorers were the first to talk about a “sticky substance” that bounced, used by South America Indians. Though it didn’t revolutionalize the world at that time, these same Indians were using a primitive form of rubber stamping to “mark and tattoo” images on men and women. In 1736, Charles Marie de la Condamine, a French scientist studying the Amazon, sent a piece of “India Rubber” back to France. Rubber got its name in 1770, when the scientist Sir Joseph Priestly made a comment about a substance “excellently adapted to the purpose of wiping from paper the mark of black lead pencil.” Hence the “rubbing out” of pencil marks gave it the term “rubber”. Up until this time, people wishing to erase pencil marks had to use bread crumbs. Rubber Stamping owes much gratitude to a hardware store owner who decided to quit his job to solve the “sticky problem” he had heard about. Though his persistence was tested time and again, even filing bankruptcy and going to jail for failure to pay debts, Charles Goodyear eventually discovered that heat was the secret to rubber’s “curing”. As early as 1866, a man carved information in a flat piece of rubber and mounted it to a curved block of wood. This 4″x 6″ mounted rubber stamp was being used to print information on bath tubs. Early rubber stamps consisted mainly of words and phrases used to mark packages and manufactured products. Stamping suppliers began to spring up in Ohio and the West. Rubber stamping as a hobby took off in the early 1970’s with companies such as All Night Media (1974) and Hero Arts (1974). Soon the craze had caught and many other companies decided to cash in on a hobby that would last for decades. It wasn’t until a boom in the 1990’s that rubber stamping became so popular with millions of crafter’s worldwide. As thousands of companies begin to produce rubber stamps, the availability and unique designs become common everywhere! It’s no wonder why rubber stamping has turned into a worldwide crafting phenomenon. Women and men alike have found hundreds of creative uses for rubber stamps, from scrapbooking and cardmaking, to gift bags and 3D artwork. Give it a try, you’ll see! Kathy Williams is a designer and producer of rubber stamps. She has assisted in the production of hundreds of mounted rubber stamps and themed rubber stamping sets. Depression: A Treatable Illness

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Jay Villaverde Depression is a serious medical condition that involves the body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way a person eats and sleeps, the way one feels about oneself, and the way one thinks about things. A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. People with a depressive illness cannot merely “pull themselves together” and get better. Without treatment, symptoms can last for weeks, months, or years. Appropriate treatment, however, can help most people who have depression. Types of Depression Depression comes in different forms, just as is the case with other illnesses such as heart disease. The three main depressive disorders are: major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and bipolar disorder. Major depression (or major depressive disorder) is manifested by a combination of symptoms (see symptom list below) that interfere with the ability to work, study, sleep, eat, and enjoy once pleasurable activities. A major depressive episode may occur only once, but more commonly, several episodes may occur in a lifetime. Chronic major depression may require a person to continue treatment indefinitely. A less severe type of depression, dysthymia (or dysthymic disorder), involves long-lasting symptoms that do not seriously disable, but keep one from functioning well or feeling good. Many people with dysthymia also experience major depressive episodes during their lives. Another type of depressive illness is bipolar disorder (or manic-depressive illness). Bipolar disorder is characterized by cycling mood changes: severe highs (mania) and lows (depression), often with periods of normal mood in between. When in the depressed cycle, an individual can have any or all of the symptoms of depression. When in the manic cycle, the person may be overactive, over-talkative, and have a great deal of energy. Mania often affects thinking, judgment, and social behavior in ways that cause serious problems and embarrassment. For example, an individual in a manic phase may feel elated and full of grand schemes that might range from unwise business decisions to romantic sprees. Symptoms of Depression Not everyone with a depressive disorder experiences every symptom. The number and severity of symptoms may vary among individuals and also over time. In addition, men and women may experience depression differently. Symptoms of depression include: - Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood - Feelings of hopelessness, pessimism - Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness - Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that were once enjoyed, including sex - Decreased energy, fatigue, being “slowed down” - Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions - Trouble sleeping, early-morning awakening, or oversleeping - Appetite and/or weight changes - Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts - Restlessness, irritability - Persistent physical symptoms, such as headaches, digestive disorders, and chronic pain, which do not respond to routine treatment Some Facts About Depression Depressive disorders are common: they affect an estimated 9.5 percent of adult Americans in a given year, or about 19 million people. Depressive disorders often begin between ages 15 and 30 but also can appear in children. The World Health Organization’s World Health Report, 2001 states that in the year 2000, depression (not including bipolar disorder) was the leading cause of years lived with a disability among men and women of all ages in the U.S. and worldwide. Treatments More than 80 percent of people with depressive disorders improve when they receive appropriate treatment. The first step to getting treatment is a physical examination by a physician to rule out other possible causes for the symptoms. Next, the physician should conduct a diagnostic evaluation for depression or refer the patient to a mental health professional for this evaluation. Treatment choice will depend on the patient’s diagnosis, severity of symptoms, and preference. A variety of treatments, including medications and short-term psychotherapies (i.e., “talking” therapies), have proven effective for depression. In general, severe depressive illnesses, particularly those that are recurrent, will require a combination of treatments for the best outcome. It usually takes a few weeks of treatment before the full therapeutic effect occurs. Once the person is feeling better, treatment may need to be continued for several months-and in some cases, indefinitely-to prevent a relapse into depression. Science Fair Projects — Are You Ready for Judgment Day?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Mort Barish The involved and energetic student has spent weeks, perhaps months on a science fair project. And now judgment day is approaching. Winning a prize would be nice, not earth shattering, but certainly a feather in the cap of the student. There are several things that the student should know to impress the judges. Some science fairs actually permit you to meet and talk to the judges. You want to take advantage of this opportunity to make a good impression. Be prepared to discuss your project and summarize it in just a few minutes. You should have enough information to give the judges an idea of what it is all about without going into too much detail. Your speech should include how you got your idea for the project, how you did the experiment, your result and conclusions. Try to think of the questions the judges will ask and prepare your answers. For practice, you might try explaining your project to someone else and make believe that they are judges. They may ask things like “How much help did others give you? Why is your project important? What is the most interesting thing you learned doing this project? What problems did you have doing this project and how did you solve them?” Don’t look like you just got through with football practice when you appear before the judges. Dress nicely. Do not mumble. Speak up and appear confident. Make good use of your graphics and charts and photos. Point to them when appropriate to demonstrate your points. Explain why your project is important, and how it will help people. Judges tend to emphasize creativity, originality and thoroughness. The guidelines are often made available before the fair. If you know exactly what the judges are looking for you can emphasize these points in your presentation. Try to get feedback from the judges. Talk to them or email them after the science fair. This feedback will help you in the future. In any event, this is your time to shine. Be confident, enjoy yourself and have fun. The Better You Get At Attracting Women Means Sometimes You Will Fall Back Into Your Nice Guy Pattern

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Teddy Shabba When it comes to learning how to attract women and stop being a nice guy it is going to take some work. You can read and learn all the techniques that you want, yet sometimes you are going to find yourself reverting back to your old ways, even if only for a moment. The fact that you will be able to recognize when you are acting like a nice guy is going to be an accomplishment in itself. If you are simply memorizing patterns and acting like you do not participate in nice guy behaviors, you might want to consider actually taking on the successful behaviors that you have learned as part of your life. When you revert its not because you had a transgression rather you didn’t have anywhere else to go with your lines. You will continue to revert back to your nice guy ways because that is who you really are and you will continue to get caught and released because a nice guy is not what a woman really wants although at a certain point in her life she will settle for one. However, if you are a man who is actually working on your inner game and taking the steps to no longer be a nice guy. Realize that even you have to take two steps forward and one step back in the learning process. The more successful you become at attracting women the higher quality of women you are going to attract. The higher quality of women you attract the better they will be at finding out who is playing the game and who the game is. Five Tips for Improving Your Reading Comprehension

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Terry Hadaway I spent the better part of 17 years in and out of higher education. Eleven of those years were invested in taking classes and pursuing degrees. In the process of having to read a lot of books and articles that I didn’t really have time to read, I began asking myself, “Isn’t there a more effective way to do this?” Like many of you, I had a life outside of the academic world. I had a family, jobs, responsibilities, and the desire to enjoy some portion of each week. Reading was necessary, but it wasn’t something I always enjoyed. That’s the way it is with academic reading… most of the things we have to read are not things we would normally select. We find ourselves falling asleep believing that the words from the book or article will ooze into our brains while our eyes are closed. There has to be a better way to stay alert and actually remember what we read! Try the following ideas: 1. Have a reading place. Create a place that is designated for reading. Don’t select a spot too comfortable or you will fall asleep. Don’t select a spot that is too uncomfortable or you will spend more time thinking about your discomfort than the reading. 2. Pick your time. If you are a morning person, your best time for reading is early morning; night people do better mid-morning to early afternoon. You have pockets of time when you are more alert, so use those times for reading. If you find yourself at work during those times, use your break times or weekends to maximize your effectiveness. 3. Focus on new information. We learn things best when we can connect new information to something we already know. Rather than simply highlighting information, write down questions such as, “How does this concept related to what I read in other publications?” For many people, highlighting sentences is counter-productive because they spend more time trying to make sure the lines are straight than they do paying attention to what the text actually says. 4. Speed up. Many people read at the speed they talk, yet research tells us that our brains process information much faster than we realize. Get in the habit of moving your eyes faster and see if you catch things you didn’t actually verbalize in your mind. You’ll be surprised at how much you actually comprehend when you speed up your reading. 5. Take good notes. In business and academics some texts are permanent fixtures. If you take good notes the first time you read a text, you will be better prepared to locate and use that information later. It is a poor use of your time to reread books and articles you have read before. File your notes so that you can locate them later. You might even stick a note inside the book telling you the location of your note. Reading is an unpleasant part of our academic endeavors, so do all you can to maximize your efficiency. Time is too valuable to waste! Think about it! The Company Brochure

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Daniel Wadleigh Just like the Yellow Page ad, or your business card, a company brochure has specific functions. It is a stand-alone, generic piece whose role is to give the following three impressions: 1. “You’re in good hands”; we know what we’re doing, and here’s who agrees; we have special training, and here’s by whom; we belong to these trade associations; we have on-going training and monitoring of all aspects of our business; etc. 2. “We do more than the other guys”; we strive to do these extras; our range of products and services include; our added values in our efforts for you are; etc. 3. “We have your best interests at heart”, and here’s who agrees… (mere self-serving statements like that are not believable, thus credible statements from happy customers are needed). Catering Advice. Staff - Happiness v Money

By John Stableforth I remember working as a kitchen porter washing the dishes for the head chef, always with a smile. I wanted to be in the kitchen with the chefs, one of the big boys. I still remember the day when the head chef called me into his office and said I was being moved into the Kitchen, I could have jumped over the moon in one jump. Here’s the funny bit about the whole thing, from that minute I took a pay cut. How many of you have been in the same boat, taken a step back to take two steps forward later on. I bet thats lots of people that have, the only problem being once you’ve taken your two steps forward you forget all about them. Now don’t get me wrong there are a lot of people working out there that aren’t thinking about promotion or that far into the future, but those people aren’t that hard to spot. lets look at a few facts: When employees were asked to list what actually motives them, they came up with 8 things. Now I’m going to put them into an order that most people think it would look like, then I will put them how the employee saw them 1) Salary2) Bonuses3) Holidays4) Interesting work5) Responsibility6) Feedback7) Training8) Respect Ok would you go along with that or not, just have a think before you read the real answers Here’s what they said: 1) Interesting work 2) Responsibility 3) Feedback 4) Training 5) Respect 6) Salary 7) Bonuses 8) Holidays Isn’t it funny how the money is right at the bottom and all the things that you were looking for all those years ago are at the top. Try and remember this when you are working with your staff or trying to get your manager to motivate your staff. Its not always about the money. You should also keep it in your head that happy staff mean’s busy business. Don’t Tell Someone You Have a Boring Job

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Oh Srichaphan One of the biggest mistakes people make on dates is talking about boring topics that no one wants to hear about. The main thing people talk about is their boring job. Sure, some of the most successful people of the world have notoriously boring jobs. But, a first date is not the time to tell someone all about your boring job. Of course, you shouldnt lie either! The reason you shouldnt talk about your boring job is because when you start talking about boring things, your date will automatically tune out. They will think you are defined by your boring job and will likely think you are boring too. Of course, if they have a boring job, you can choose to do nothing but talk about boring jobs all night long. If you do get cornered and your date asks specifically about your job, you can always try to make it sound exciting. The easiest way to do this is to be mysterious about it all. You can do this by revealing only a little bit about your job. For instance, if you are an accountant you can just tell your date you manage the financial affairs of your company, and leave it as that. Using Hair Dryers: 7 Tips For Great Results

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Mike Jones Choosing a good hair dryer is essential if you are going to get good results. Anything less than 1500 watts is probably underpowered. Aim for the 1500 to 1800 watt range. Keep the attachments and learn to use them. The nozzle is key to directing hot air to the right place when styling your hair. The diffuser is important for diffusing the air over a wide area, and for adding volume or waves to the hair. 1. Make sure you either move your hair or circulate the hair dryer over your hair to avoid heat damage from keeping the hair dryer on one specific area too long. 2. Choosing the correct shampoo and conditioner can have a big effect on your final result. Select a shampoo and conditioner specifically for your hair type, whether it is dry or oily, thick or fine, or colored. 3. Towel dry your hair before using a hair dryer. Droop your head upside down so the hair hangs loose and run your fingers through your hair as you use the hair dryer. When the hair is nearly dry use a styling brush. This method will do much to protect your hair from undue damage. Wet hair is fragile! 4. Divide your hair into sections when applying styling aids. Use your fingers or a comb to make sure all the strands receive even distribution of the styling product. 5. Practice keeping your elbows at shoulder level and use your wrists and lower arm to move the hair dryer and hold the brush. This will alleviate aching arms once you master this technique. 6. To give your hair more body, be sure to lift the hair from the roots with your styling brush, and blow against the direction of hair growth. Aim the nozzle of the hair dryer down the shaft of the hair. 7. Once your hair is completely dry and you have finished styling, put your hair dryer on the cold setting, tilt your head forward, and give your hair a blast of cold air to seal the style. This also helps avoid static. Ionic and Tourmaline hair dryers are now available which produce negative ions and allow the hair to dry more quickly. Additionally these newer kinds of hair dryers add sheen, shine, and sleekiness to your hair.
