Fall Blooming Wildflower - Zig Zag Goldenrod Solidago Flexicaulis

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

By Paul Wonning Goldenrod Zig Zag Solidago flexicaulis Family - Compositeae - Daisy The Zig Zag Goldenrod is the most unlikely looking member of this large family. Most of the members of the Solidago tribe have flower spikes at the top of the plant, and have narrow, dagger shaped leaves. The leaves on this one are broader, the flower clusters appearing at the joint (axil) of the leaf and stem. There will also be a rounded flower cluster at the top of the plant. Like all goldenrods, the flower color is bright yellow. The leaves and flowers have sort of a zig zag fashion along the stem. Solidago flexicaulis has a fairly wide range, appearing from North Dakota, Minnesota and Quebec, Canada in the north, south to Georgia and west to Arkansas. It will be found in rich woodlands and thickets and will grow from one to three feet tall. The goldenrod family is a fairly large, fall blooming group of wildflowers. The Zig Zag Goldenrod should be one of the easier of the Solidago tribe to identify, because it is so different from the others. But because of these differences, one may not think it is a goldenrod, and begin searching in other families of plants in a field guide. But the bright yellow flowers are the trademark butter yellow of the other types and they brighten any spot of woodland which they inhabit. Paul Wonning is the owner of Gardens and Nature.com a web site about gardening, hiking and other nature related topics. Marketing Advice for House Cleaning Businesses

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

By Walt Gibson Avoid Ineffective Advertising Lets examine the target market for a house cleaning business. The majority of your prospective customers will be upper-middle class, middle age professionals who do not have the time to clean, but do have the financial resources to hire a cleaning company. Other prospects will fall into either the 30 40 age group with younger children at home, or the 60 80 age group. They are looking for a professionally run cleaning business which guarantees customer satisfaction, and stands behind that guarantee. How do you advertise to such a broad age group? TV, Newspapers, Radio? Unfortunately, there is such a great variance in interests that it is impossible to reach all prospects with just one of these media. Therefore, an ongoing marketing strategy that incorporates all media sources is optimal. By keeping your company continuously in front of the consumer you become known to them. When they receive your direct mail piece, notice your car signs in their neighborhood, see your TV ads, find you in the yellow pages and on the internet, youve hit all the bases. Chances are youll be the first company they consider when they need a cleaning service. Branding A brand is the memory created through a person’s collective experience of a company, product or service. Therefore, your logo; verbal and written promises; physical appearance of cleaning technicians, cleanliness of cars and equipment; customer testimonials — both verbal and written; and finally the personal experience in each home and on the phone brands your company image into the publics mind. Every experience you provide must be consistent with the image you want to create. Branding is marketing, and marketing includes every aspect of public contact. Timing In order for your marketing to succeed your prospects must be exposed to it when theyre in a receptive frame of mind. You wouldnt want your direct mail pieces to be delivered Monday through Thursday because some prospects are busy thinking about work and time management issues. Friday and Saturday are the days which your direct mail piece will have a more likely chance of being read. Similarly, placing a newspaper ad in the Business section would be less likely to attract the attention you desire — your ads should be placed in the Home and Garden section to be read at a time that your prospects are focused on their home. Follow this same principle if you use local TV advertising by running your ads during programs which are geared toward upper-income viewers, at a time that they are relaxed and focused on home life, i.e. food, home, or travel shows. Television Television is by far the most expensive form of marketing. Also, it provides the least amount of qualified leads. If you are determined to produce a TV commercial do some research first: Contact all of your local TV stations and ask for samples of commercials they have produced for local companies. Be aware that the stations will not send sample tapes without first determining if you are a valid prospect you will have to meet with advertising salespeople. Set aside at least two hours each for the appointments and related phone calls from sales people. After you have met with a few salespeople you will know if your budget can handle TV advertising. If you decide to continue with this venue ask each salesperson for samples of commercials their stations have produced, you may have to insist that this is a preliminary step to their gaining your business. When you view the commercials, note the names of the companies which are service oriented then call each one and inquire about the results of their TV ad campaign. Ask the following questions: Were your ads run during programs that were geared toward upper income viewers? Were you certain that your ads did indeed run as scheduled, or were they bumped by higher dollar advertisers? If your ads were bumped from your desired spot, did the station run them during inappropriate programs and charge you anyway? After the commercial ran, did qualified prospects call for estimates? What was the ratio of qualified vs. unqualified prospects? Were the results worth the amount you spent on this form of advertising? What marketing vehicle have you found to be the most effective? Be certain your contract states that if your ad is bumped from its spot you will NOT be charged if it is moved to programming you have not pre-approved. Be forewarned that your salesperson has no idea what is going on with your ad, and has no control over it once it has been sent to the lineup personnel. If at the last minute your ad is bumped, it may become a filler ad at 2am on a court-TV rerun. Finally, record the time slots you have pre-approved so that you can determine if your advertising budget has been working for you or against you. If your ad did not run as specified in your contract, you have proof use it! Call the salesperson, and if necessary speak to the station manager in order to have the ad run during appropriate programming and if your contact states such, do not pay for ads which were not properly run. Direct Mail We have found that direct mail gives the highest return per dollar, and is guaranteed to reach all who you target — if your mail piece is cost effective and your mailing list is accurate. Your choices for direct mail are letters, brochures or postcards. Letters are most likely to be considered junk-mail and will be unopened, and brochures can be expensive to produce. Therefore, the most cost effective direct mail piece is a postcard. Postcards are non-invasive, quickly read, easily saved or carried to work, and are economical. Whether or not the cards are read, they display your logo on both sides; therefore, repetitively sending postcards instills name recognition. Your postcard should state the customer satisfaction guarantee, services you offer, insurances carried, your website address, and phone numbers. You can have an advertising firm create a postcard for you, or save money by using the pre-formatted cards from MaidDocs. Send your customers and dormant customers a marketing piece at least twice each year. During months that business is slow, offer discounts on deep cleaning services for your current customers. Spring cleaning and pre-holiday specials are the best vehicles to renew business with dormant customers and to reach new prospects. Direct mail lists are available through a number of sources. The most economical lists we have found are the City Search discs offered by Hill-Donnelly. Telephone assistance is provided by Hill-Donnelly to teach you how to extract information from the discs and save it as a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Other lists are available through many sources which you can locate on the internet. Also, most companies offer the information pre-sorted onto mailing labels, ready to peel-and-stick. Visit your local post office and purchase a First Class pre-paid mailing permit. The USPS representative will provide instructions on how to set up the permit block. When your postcards are printed you simply count out the number to be mailed, and then deliver them to the bulk-mail representative at your local post office. This saves time (no applying stamps by hand) and looks more professional. Door-Knockers Door-knockers are marketing pieces that are pre-cut to hang on a door knob. Although they are inexpensive to produce, paying your employees to deliver them can be costly. Also, there is the chance that they will toss the door-knockers out and add delivery hours to their timesheet. Therefore, door knockers are not a cost effective means of advertising unless you plan to deliver them yourself, or have an effective tracking method for delivery. Internet Local service companies are often listed for free on community pages. Find them all and present them with your information. Many offer online submission forms but if you need to call and personally ask to be listed, it is well worth the effort. Include your logo, website and email addresses in each listing. Having your own website is desirable. Depending upon the area you are servicing, a percentage of your business will come directly from prospects surfing the web for cleaning service companies. Other prospects may receive a marketing piece or find your ad in the yellow pages, and visit the website before calling. Prospects who call but dont book a service should be directed to the website as a means to reiterate your phone conversation and to view customer testimonials. You should be able to find a local web developer in the yellow pages, or better yet, ask other small business owners for a reference. Once you have a few candidates ask them for the addresses of websites which they have developed. Log on to these sites and visit all of the pages to ascertain whether the design and visitor generated forms give an impression that is compatible with the branding you want for your company. When you determine which designs match your needs, send an e-mail to the business owners asking if they are satisfied with the knowledge and service provided by the webmaster. Yellow Pages Many prospects will search the yellow pages for service companies. Some will look you up in the yellow pages when they receive a direct mail piece just to verify that you are a legitimate company. Most of the information which is on your postcard should be listed in the yellow pages ad. If this is cost prohibitive, then simply state Satisfaction Guaranteed and always list your website address. When considering the type of ads to place, remember that your ad must stand out from the competition. Research all of your local phone books and notice which ads catch your eye. A good bet is a knock-out ad with at least 2 colors. The knock-out removes the yellow background and leaves a crisp, attention grabbing white field among all the yellow ads. For a lesser cost you may list your company in the yellow pages free listing column with a knock-out and color. Make this ad a minimum of four 4 lines, with color. Be certain to call your local yellow pages to ascertain their deadlines for placing ads in the next edition. It would be a shame to miss this marketing vehicle and have to wait a full year to be listed. White Pages Yellow knock-outs can be incorporated into your white pages listing. Make this ad a minimum of four 4 lines, and add color if you can afford it. Remember to list your website address here also. Newspapers Newspapers are the second most used form of advertising for small businesses, following directly after the Yellow Pages. Your ads should be placed in Home and Garden section to be read at a time that your prospects are focused on their home. Of course Sunday is the ultimate day to advertise, but also the most expensive. Also, most papers publish special sections that may run only once per month or several times per year budget extra advertising dollars to run your ad in all home or leisure specials. Double check all written information from the sales department to assure that your ads will be run in the proper sections. Insist on viewing a proof of the ad and having a final approval before publishing. Keep in mind that you must accommodate the newspapers schedule if you do not provide feedback in a timely manner your ad will either miss the print or it will proceed without your approval. Finally — read the paper to be certain that your ad was properly printed and placed. If the paper made an error, you should insist on a reprint in the next comparable edition. Measuring Success You can measure the success of your marketing campaign by keeping a record of how many estimates are generated, and how many are converted to customers. By tracking all responses according to their sources, you can test individual ad campaigns to see which marketing approach and special offers produce the most profitable results for your cleaning business. Then focus your marketing budget on the avenues which are most productive. Note: A further discussion of marketing can be found in the MaidDocs Business Owners Manual available at MaidDocs.com. How To Pass Exams

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By Anthony Keith Whitehead In modern society passing educational examinations becomes an increasingly important and essential means to a better job and improved living standards. The structure and nature of all examinations are things we cannot change to suit ourselves. Hence we need to find ways of dealing effectively with them - ways of making their systems and requirements actually work for us. There are ways of doing this and the following can be successfully used by anyone studying for any examinations because exams usually have certain key common elements. Check Out The Syllabus As an examinee, you have to abide by certain rules and constraints. The time length of the exam, how many question you have to answer, and so forth. But the examiners also have to abide by certain rules - and they cannot change them (at least not without adequate notice) any more than you can! They have to publish a syllabus for every examination and they can only ask questions on what is contained within that syllabus. Once you know the syllabus, you know where the starting and finishing lines are and how far you have to run Moreover, all parts of the syllabus are not equal: some parts of it are more equal than others. Some topics will hardly ever be questioned while others will come up every year. Highlight the syllabus using two colours: red, say, for those areas that come up very frequently; green for those which rarely come up. Do this only after a systematic inspection of past exam papers, as the next section will explain. Then use a third colour to highlight those (hopefully very few) parts of the syllabus which you have really serious difficulty with. Providing these parts are not numerous, and depending on how often they come up, it may be possible to leave them on one side. But do use sense and judgement in doing this! Whatever You Are Studying, First Study The Exam Papers Studying past examination papers is almost as crucial as studying the subject you have chosen! Get hold of as many past papers as you can. The more you have the better you will be able to discern any patterns. Draw up a grid on A4 paper. Divide the top horizontally into years - as many as you have past papers for plus one for the year in which you are going to sit the exam Divide the lefthand vertical into as many subject areas as seems appropriate from your inspection of the syllabus and past exam papers. Do this very careful and only after you have become very familiar with the exam topics. Also, make allowance for any coupling of topics because sometimes examiners like to link one topic with another. If you have, say, a dozen past papers and a particular linking has only come up once, you are probably save to forget it. But if it has occurred, say, three or four times it needs to go down. So now you have large set of cells, each of which relates to a particular year and to a specific topic. Place a cross in each cell for the year in which a given topic has come up. If there is a pattern, and very often there is, you will soon see it. The relative frequency with which the various topic come up will now be easy to see. It is not that examiners are doing a parallel kind of exercise to determine the structure of the next examination they set. They might well be unaware of the kinds of patterns we are talking about. But examiners do have at least a mental scheduling of the relative importance of particular topics and an impression of what have been chosen recently. Now use the spare column on the right-hand side, which relates to the year you are going to sit the exam, to mark those subject areas which seem most likely to come up this next time. These are the ones which you need to spend extra time on. The other areas need to be covered as well, but your projections need special care and attention. In the case of some examinations such a pattern may not seem to emerge. But often it will. In any case, it is worth the investment of time to find out, and whether it does or not it would be foolish not to inspect as many past papers as possible. You need to see how the questions are phrased, how they are divided, sometimes even subdivided, whether there are any special conditions imposed, such as papers which are divided into different sections with different lengths of time allowed for each, and so forth. Overall, many students just seem to accept the constraints of an examination system as a barbed wire fence they can do nothing about. But the foregoing might just give you a set of wire cutters! Children’s Hospitals

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Steve_Valentino] Steve Valentino Childrens hospitals are medical institutions that specialize in infancy and childhood diseases. These hospitals generally integrate medical care, preventive services, teaching, and research. They are the centers of health care and research, providing innovative solutions to pediatric healthcare problems. The patients in these hospitals include children from rural as well as metropolitan areas. The child health care team in a childrens hospital consists of physicians, nurses, dieticians, and speech therapists, along with specialists required for the all kinds of health problems. They offer a full range of care from routine checkups and emergency care to extensive patient care. While most childrens hospital serve children with complex and severe medical conditions, many of them also help children to grow up healthy through preventive care like vaccines. The history of childrens hospitals can be traced back to the year 1821 when the lack of medical services to sick children in Dublin led some eminent doctors to found the citys National Childrens Hospital. This hospital was among the first ones set up exclusively for children. Dr. Charles West, one of the founders of the hospital, helped to launch another childrens hospital in London in the year 1852. The hospital was named the Great Ormond Street Hospital. Ten of the oldest childrens hospital in U.S. and Canada are the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (1855), Boston Childrens Hospital (1869), Children’s Hospital National Medical Center, Washington, D.C; St. Mary’s Hospital for Children, Children’s Seashore House, Atlantic City; The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto; Children’s Memorial Hospital, Chicago, and Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati. Hospitals for children play a vital role in the health care of children and have been affiliating with research institutes and medical colleges to find the best means to diagnose, treat and cure pediatric diseases. They also train nurses, occupational therapists, dentists and health professionals who contribute to the welfare and healthy development of children in these childrens hospitals. How To Lose Weight With South Beach Diet

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

By Monice Dulcinea While the Atkins Diet is losing its popularity fast, the South Beach Diet is getting more devoted fans around the world. The South Beach Diet is NOT a traditional low-carb diet plan. It was developed by Miami cardiologist Arthur Agatston in order to help dieters lose weight through "good carbs" and "good fats". Why "Good Carbs"? Because when you eat "bad carbs", your body creates what it’s called an "insulin resistance" syndrome — meaning your body cannot properly process body fat or sugar. Why "Good Fats"? Because when you eat "bad fats", you only increase your chance of developing heart diseases. The Three Phases of the South Beach Diet 1. Phase One (2 weeks) In this phase, avoid high-glycemic foods, such as ice cream, sports drinks, glucose sugar, maltose sugar, baked potatoes, mashed potatoes, chips, donuts, waffles, rice cakes, wafer biscuits, white bread, bagel, baguette, pretzels, rice pasta, instant rice, watermelon, jellybeans, and cornflakes. As a result, your body will lose its insulin resistance, and begin to use excess body fat. You can expect to lose between 8 and 13 pounds. Individual results may vary. 2. Phase Two (no time limit) In this phase, try to reintroduce the right carbs slowly, such as fruit and whole-grain breads and pastas. Continue to eat low-glycemic foods, such as multigrain bread, barley, grapefruit, apple, pear, orange, cherries, lettuce, spinach, pepper, green beans, tomatoes, artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, cauliflower, celery, lentils, soy beans, kidney beans, low fat yoghurt, soy milk, grapefruit juice, and fructose sugar. There is no time limit for this phase. Just follow it until you reach your weight loss goal. 3. Phase Three This phase begins when you reach your desired weight. In this phase, include three servings of whole grains and three servings of fruit a day. Tips If you want to lose weight with the South Beach Diet, you should eat whole grains, certain vegetables and fruits, along with the good fats, such as olive oil and fish. Don’t forget to choose lean sources of protein. Make sure you always count calories and limit your servings. The most important thing is you should avoid overly refined foods, high fat meats, and saturated fats. Feel free to publish this article as long as you keep all links live and clickable. Elements of a Successful Customer Newsletter: 3 - Personality

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007

By Simon Payn For the most part, people buy from people and not from companies. That’s something many salespeople (and many people who don’t consider themselves salespeople but nevertheless run a business) already know. After all, isn’t it true that you build a relationship with some clients…and it’s these clients who go on to become your best customers? So that’s why I always say it’s important to inject some personality into your newsletter. Now…I don’t mean you should splash your picture and your name everywhere. Don’t forget, readers are interested in themselves, not in you. But it does mean you should avoid creating a sterile and corporate publication just because you think it might look more professional that way. So how do you inject personality into your newsletter? Here are some ideas: 1) Include your picture somewhere. Many people already know you from visiting you, so why not continue that face recognition on the printed page? People often respond to faces quicker and easier than they do to names. After all, why do you think most magazines put faces on their covers? Because people can relate to a face. Faces sell. 2) Include a personal column. Write something about your life - your likes and your hates. Don’t go overboard and rant, just give them a taster. The kind of stuff you might share anyway with a client you meet face to face. 3) Include some opinion. If you think something’s a good idea, say so! And if you think something’s a bad idea, say so too! As a service or product provider people come to you for advice, so don’t be afraid to give it to them, particularly if you find that in the face-to-face world people respect and act on your advice. Personality is important, but it’s vital to do it well. Write with integrity. Don’t be someone other than the real you. And don’t overdo it. Remember that people are interested in themselves, not in you. Simon Payn is founder of Ready To Go Newsletters - the quick and easy way to keep your customers coming back. Bridging Loans

Monday, November 19th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joseph_Kenny]Joseph Kenny A couple of years ago my wife and I were in the process of selling our house. We were pretty sure we had found a buyer and had agreed on a price acceptable to both them, and us but they wouldnt be able to buy our house for about three months. My wife and I were totally ok with this since we werent in any particular hurry to move, we just wanted to move into a bigger home outside of town, somewhere a bit more rural. Well, one weekend while we were driving around the countryside looking at houses, we saw the perfect farmhouse. It was exactly what we were looking for. Not too far out of town, on a quiet road, overlooking a little lake and surrounded by tall oak trees. In short it was perfect. We contacted the selling agent and found out that the price was within our budget, but only just. We told him it would be three months before wed be able to buy it and this caused him to pause. Apparently there was a lot of interest in that little house and he couldnt justify delaying the sale for three months. So we let it go. Why a Bridging Loan? We did find another beautiful house so the story has a happy ending but is there anything we could have done to get that first house? The answer, had we known it at the time, would have been a bridging loan. Bridging loans are short-term loans offered by commercial lenders to borrowers for a specific purpose. They can range in time from two weeks, for a very short loan, to up to three years for commercial bridging loans. Homebuyers who have not yet sold their property and wish to buy require these bridging loans. Interest Rates The interest rates are probably higher than for your typical mortgage but this is because of the added flexibility and convenience you have from the lender. There will also be set up fees involved. However, they may work out at significantly cheaper than some of the alternatives such as renting accommodation. There will also be many situations in which the price will be well worth paying if it means getting your dream home. You should always shop around before agreeing to a bridging loan as rates and fees can vary significantly. You dont have to get it from your mortgage provider although there may be advantages to doing so. Airline Customer Service Careers

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

By Matthew Keegan The US airline industry is gradually moving away from all the bloodletting that brought about the bankruptcy of four major carriers over the past several years while at the same time marked the emergence of many discount carriers into the forefront of the business. Indeed, the face of commercial aviation has changed dramatically over the past decade and it now appears that the worst is behind us. This does not mean that further layoffs and downsizings are not possible, but for the person seeking a customer service career in the aviation industry, the future has brightened considerably. Customer service opportunities with the airlines includes the following job titles: reservation agents, ramp agents, line service technicians, customer service agents, baggage handlers, and various management positions including station manager, customer service manager, and airport operations manager. Similar job titles exist, but for the sake of brevity in using the term airline customer service I mean those ground personnel tasked with assisting customers as they get to and from their destinations. So, exactly who is hiring? Well, on any given day just about everyone could be. The turn over rate for customer service personnel can be high, depending on the airline and the working conditions. To make it easier on you, the following is a break down of the various airlines who hire customer service agents. In most cases you will work directly for the airline but in some cases a position may be with a vendor or for the airport authority itself. Legacy Carriers American, Continental, Delta, Northwest, United, and USAir all qualify as legacy carriers. Simply defined these are the carriers that helped the airline industry get its start in the U.S. Out of the six listed, only American and Continental have avoided bankruptcy. Thus, a career with a legacy carrier can be a risky proposition. Foreign Carriers Many foreign carriers fly in and out of the U.S. and are worth a look. Depending on the carrier selected, you may be required to speak the language of the carriers country in addition to speaking English. Chief carriers include: Air Canada, Mexicana, Air France, British Airways, Japan Airlines, Korean Airlines, KLM, Lufthansa, and flag carriers as well as discount carriers from dozens of countries from around the globe. Discount Carriers Some of the strongest carriers in operation today are discount airlines. Two of the best are Southwest and JetBlue, both of which are expanding and are hiring on a regular basis. Other discount carriers include: Spirit, USA3000, and many small more regional carriers. Regional Operators Working as feeder airlines for the big carriers, regional operators include Colgan, Republic, Shuttle America, American Eagle, Comair, and Great Lakes. Some of these carriers are awash in cash with very promising futures. Charter Carriers A few airlines fly chartered flights principally although some have scheduled flights too. Some of the more noted charter operators include: Miami Air, Xtra Airways, and Sun Country. Cargo Carriers — Not every carrier moves people. Some carriers move goods, merchandise, and equipment. Customer service jobs as sales agents and equipment handlers are an option for potential employees. Chief cargo companies include: DHL, FEDEX, UPS, Emery Worldwide, and Amerijet. Two recently launched carriers, EOS Airlines and Maxjet Airways, went through a hiring surge immediately preceding their first flights in Autumn 2005. As with any start up, long term career possibilities are a big question as most start ups eventually fail. In all, the opportunities for you in the airline industry have improved. While pay for hourly workers is generally low the benefits, including flight privileges, are usually fairly good. In spite of everything, the airline industry remains a point of interest for so many people and with decreasing fuel prices and strength in the economy, the job market for customer service personnel is on an upswing. From Post-Grad to Grad School

Friday, November 16th, 2007

By Sharon Rushen So you Wanna Go to Grad School? Unlike undergrad studies, getting into a graduate school may prove more complicated. Before you jump into the application process, there are some things you should know. Make sure you are financially, mentally and academically prepared. Many post-grads enter the real world and realize its not all its cracked up to be. Considering the less than desirable pay for many entry level jobs and the menial tasks, many hopeful grads choose to go back to school. It isnt as easy as it sounds, many grad schools require GREs (Graduate Record Examination), which equates to the college version of the SATs. So, before jumping on the grad school band wagon, make sure you know what you are getting yourself in to. First you need to evaluate your current situation. Although you may not be happy with your current job there is always the option of shopping around. But, if you realize the career field youre in isnt right for you, maybe its time to go back to school. According to Do masters degrees really pay off? an article on Colleges.com, the U.S. Census Bureau shows that masters degrees recipients between ages 25 and 64 earn about $240,000 more than someone with a bachelors degree. So, yes, the pay increase is significant and may be worth it. Keep in mind that, like your bachelors, your masters is going to cost you a pretty penny. According to Kiplinger.coms article Free Money for Grad School, the average cost of grad school can range from $17,000 a year to $56,000 a year. So, if you already owe money for your undergrad loans, you are going to rack up some more debt. Kiplinger.com also reports some good news in the manner: 4 out of 5 full time graduate students earn financial aid. With all the pros in mind, you should also consider the application process. Besides the $90 application fee, most grad schools require the GRE. Although you may have received a great education from a top-notch school, the GREs arent as easy as you think. The GRE general test is made up of three sections: Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical. And like the SATs, the Quantitative section is Math problems. Since many undergrad programs allow their students to swap college level math courses with Computer Science and such, this section may prove to be difficult for many students. To shed some light on the what seems to be hush-hush process of taking the GREs, here are some statistics. According to www.fairtest.org, the average score in the verbal section of the GREs is 465, the average score for the quantitative section: 578 and the average score for the analytical: 562. Right now, these are just numbers so heres a bit of perspective. To fall into the 96th-99th percentile, you must receive a 720, to fall into the 79-90th percentile: a 630, and to fall into the 61st-75th percentile: a 570 (www.800score.com). What does that say for average test-takers? Well most of us may very well place in the 70th percentile, and for most graduate schools that isnt very promising. Many graduate schools expect GRE scores in the 80th to 90th percentile. What to do? If you want to go to grad school and have to take the GREs, buy some books and take some practice tests. For an extensive review and reader friendly tips try The GRE for Dummies by Suzee Vlk or Word Smart for the GRE by Anne Curtis. But seriously, dont take the test blindly, because no matter how many times you take it you cant erase your initial scores. In review, unhappy post-grads may see promise in going to grad school. If you are one of them, make sure you know what youre in for. A better salary may be the result of a masters degree but nothing worthwhile ever comes easy. So, make sure you are prepared for the road ahead: do your research. By Niall Cinneide The fish you are after in saltwater fishing are probably these: - cod - tarpon - eels - sea catfish - mackerel - barracuda - swordfish - bass - tuna - sharks - and many more varieties. The Gear You Need First and foremost, you need a good quality rod. Go for 8 and a half to 9 feet. Also, insure it is good quality as you will need the strength. In reels, you should go for those that are protected from saltwater corrosion. Look for those made from stainless steel, titanium or fiber/resin. Again, go with a good quality choice, one that is at least $100. For your line, youll need a floating line for flat or shallow areas. For underwater fishing, go with a clear, middle ground line. Try out one of the clear, sink tip lines too. In leaders, you need a longer leader for a shy fish. For one that is toothy, go with a thick leader. Also, flies. You will need to choose a variety of flies. You can purchase them in a wide variety or look for those promoted by expert anglers. Now, Casting Have you done any fly casting for trout? Then, youll have not problem. The goal is to go light. Dont overline which is when you use a line that is over the recommended weight for your fishing rod. No experience? Try to take advantage of some lessons before heading out or take a professional to teach you. When it comes to hooking your fish, dont lift your rod high into the air. You dont want to fight it. Try to upset the fishs swimming pattern by rolling it. When you are ready to land it, keep your rod tip low. If you high stick it, then you are likely to break your rod. Use a pair of pliers and gloves to make sure you dont end up hurt. What To Bait With You can use both live and artificial bait in saltwater fishing. You can use live and natural products for a wide range of fish. Most will take shrimp and baitfish work well too. If you use something that your fish would normally eat in his diet, you are likely to get a hit. This could be things like crayfish, crabs, oysters and crustacean. Make sure that you do not overweight it. The size of your hook should be the size of your bait. All of this has you ready to head out to enjoy the awesome adventure of saltwater fishing.
