Florida Fishing For Pompano

By Bob Alexander Every fisherman who has ever thrown his bait into the Gulf of Mexico likes to fish for Pompano. They’re the best tasting fish in the gulf, bar none. They’re also fairly easy to catch from June until the middle of December. Winter and spring months are only fair because they are scattered and generally smaller than the one’s caught in the summer and fall. The Pompano were running up and down the Gulf of Mexico this fine Fourth of July weekend. This is a fish that truly loves warmer water, with their preferred water temperature being between 82 and 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Walking along the beach just after first light with the smell of the ocean and the spray from the surf leaving the taste of salt on your lips is an absolutely wonderful way to start the day. The sun, just peeking through the mist, will soon burn away any lingering wisps of fog remaining on the beach. Seabirds fighting over remnants of a mysterious sea object that has washed ashore, reminds me to protect the shrimp I had stored in a bucket next to my beach chair. A solitary pelican has just crept within 15 yards of me and is staring at the bait bucket as though he can see inside. He must have heard the shrimp moving around. This beautiful morning I was fishing off the beautiful sugar white sand of Mexico Beach, just east of Port St. Jo and just down the road from Panama City, Florida. One of the few areas that is not overly populated, either by local fishermen or by tourists, it was a surprise to find myself relatively alone. Looking up and down the beach you could only see an occasional beach walker searching the sand to see what secrets the sea had washed ashore on the early morning tide. Pompano are not fish eaters so the first thing you have to do when fishing is to secure your bait. Besides the shrimp I had already bought, I had to have sand fleas. They’re on any Pompano’s menu and they’re usually plentiful along most beaches. The easiest and cheapest way to obtain these them is to catch them yourself! They’re found at the waters edge as it recedes back into the sea. As the water rushes back from the beach, you’ll see small holes appear at the water’s edge. Those holes are where a sand flea is burrowing. Immediately dig down and you’ll find them. For my sand flea hunting I simply use a sturdy bucket that I’ve drilled many holes in the bottom and sides. This allows the water to flush out of its container and leave the sand fleas on the bottom when I dig for them. There are several types of sand flea rakes you could buy, but making your own is more fun. I’ve even seen kids on the beach digging for them with a stiff toy beach bucket. Just use whatever is handy. After you catch a dozen or more, put them into your bait bucket with a little sand and water and you’re ready to start fishing. You can always catch more fleas when you run out of the ones you’ve already caught. Pompano run in schools. Where you find one, you will usually find many, so remember that when you’re catching sand fleas. Pompano also eat shrimp with live ones being the better bait but dead ones will work if your bait shrimp is not alive. I use a weight 5′ rod and a light reel with 8 to 10 lb test line. I use this because I know that most pompano are between 1 pound and 3 pounds. I also keep a 7′ surf rod and surf reel with 15 lb test line in the other line holder just in case I hang a bigger fish. The rig that has worked well for me starts with a barrel swivel on the end of my line. I’ll then tie a 3′ to 4′ foot of 30 lb leader to the swivel. After that comes the two 8″ lengths of leader on which I will tie 1/0 circle hooks. I’ll tie those about 12″ apart. After that, all that remains is tying a 2 ounce egg sinker to the bottom of the leader. Then all I have to so is bait my hooks and throw the rig as far out on the gulf as I can. That’s usually about 30 to 40 yards. There are other more sophisticated and expensive ways to catch both pompano and sand fleas, but I choose to keep it simple and as cheap as I can. Vacations are costly enough without spending a lot of money on bait and the fish you will catch with them. Most of us, if we add up the cost of a fishing trip and divide that into the amount of fish we catch, would be much better off going to a good restaurant. I figure that counting the gas for the trip to the beach, lodging, food, bait and a few souvenirs, each fish I caught that day cost me approximately $438.00 each. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission says that identity theft is it’s number one source of consumer complaints - 42 percent of all complaints, in 2001. The thief will use your personal information to open credit card accounts, cell phone accounts, open bank accounts in your name and write bad checks-leaving the victim with the bills and ruined credit ratings. Identity thieves may pose as representatives of banks, Internet service providers and even government agencies to get you to reveal your Social Security number, mother’s maiden name, financial account numbers and identifying information. In a recent article (http://www.msnbc.com/news/830411.asp), MSNBC reported the case of a man who fell victim to a fraudulent job listing that was posted at Monster.com. According to the article: “It was just the job lead Jim needed: a marketing manager position with Arthur Gallagher, a leading international insurance broker. And only days after Jim responded to the job posting on Monster.com, a human resources director sent along a promising e-mail. We’re interested in you, the note said. The salary is negotiable, the clients big. In fact, the clients are so valuable and sensitive that you’ll have to submit to a background check as part of the interview process. Eager for work, Jim complied- and sent off just about every key to his digital identity, including his age, height, weight, Social Security number, bank account numbers, even his mother’s maiden name.” Jim spent the day canceling his credit cards, checking his balances and contacting the credit bureaus, but he’s concerned that his information is now “out there”. There are warning signs that can tip you off to fraudulent job listings. While these items don’t necessarily mean that the listing is a scam, they are indications that you should do further checking. –Incorrect grammar and spelling errors –Phone or fax number area codes don’t match the address given –Unrealistic salary Online job databases are not the only places that identity thieves cruise for personal information. In recent indictments across the U.S., individuals have been charged with obtaining and using personal information through various ways. In Miami, two individuals were indicted for illegally tapping the computer networks of restaurants using the cover of a dummy corporation. A clerical worker at the New York State Insurance Fund pilfered office files and used stolen identities (of people across the country as well as fellow office workers) to obtain goods and services. A phlebotomist at Kaiser Permanente admitted to using the personal information of patients and employees in order to open credit card accounts in various names. Recently, an FTC investigation into a work-at-home scheme spawned an incredible “scam-within-a-scam” when a man pretending to be an FTC employee emailed hundreds of the scam’s victims. He requested personal information stating that it was to be used as evidence in the case. While it’s impossible to completely eliminate the chances of becoming a victim, you can minimize the risk by putting the following to practice: –If a would-be employer asks you for any personal information you should ask them for their contact information and then separately look up the company’s information and contact them to verify that they actually exist. While it’s not unusual for an employer to ask for certain work-related information (like your work history and former employers), it is not appropriate for them to ask for personal information (like a social security number) unless you are actually being hired (and you’ve checked them out to make sure they’re legitimate). Even then, you should never be asked for financial information such as a credit card number. –On online resumes, never include your social security number and keep even your work history brief. –Check your credit card statements often. Believe it or not, many people never even check them! –Be sure to follow up with creditors if your bill doesn’t arrive on time. A missing credit card bill may mean that an identity thief has changed your billing address to cover their tracks. –Order your credit report from one of the major credit bureaus each year and verify that everything is correct. What to do if you’ve been a victim of identity theft: The FTC maintains Consumer Sentinels Identity Theft Data Clearinghouse, the nations repository for identity theft complaints. The FTC established the Identity Theft Toll-Free Hotline, 1.877.IDTHEFT (1.877.438.4338) and the ID Theft Website (www.consumer.gov/idtheft) to give identity theft victims a central place to report their problems and receive helpful information. The Internet Fraud Complaint Center (IFCC) is a partnership between the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C). Appellate Division Dismisses Claim After Plaintiff Failed To Name Company As Asbestos Supplier

By Eric Genau A worker’s failure to identify a defendant as a supplier of the asbestos product to which he alleges exposure dooms his claims, the New York Appellate Division, Fourth Department affirmed on April 28 in Gorzka v. Insulation Distributors, Inc. Matthew Gorzka sued a number of defendants, alleging that he developed injuries related to his workplace exposure to asbestos. Defendant IDI moved for and was granted summary judgment by Justice James B. Kane. Plaintiffs appealed. The court upheld the decision, stating that IDI had met its burden by establishing that Gorzka never identified it as a supplier of any asbestos product to which he alleged exposure. Plaintiffs’ failure to name IDI as a supplier in his response to its interrogatories is an admission that it was not the source of asbestos-containing product to which he alleges exposure. The court held that Gorzka’s evidence showing that IDI supplied asbestos-containing products to his employer is insufficient to create a reasonable inference that he was exposed to those products. There has been a great deal of discussion about asbestos legislation in recent months. Still, federal legislation that would create a $140 billion trust fund to handle asbestos claimants is unlikely to come up for a vote on the Senate floor in the near future, and alternatives in the House of Representatives are also stalled. Sources said leaders in the Republican Party will not bring S. 852, the Fairness in Asbestos Injury Resolution Act, back to the Senate floor until they are sure they have the 60 votes necessary to overcome the budget point of order. The bill was on the Senate floor once already this year. At that time, Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., raised a budget point of order that the Senate failed to overcome by a 58-to-41 vote on Feb. 14, sending the bill to the Senate Budget Committee. Sen. Arlen Specter, R.-Pa., and other supporters were quoted at the time as saying they would try to resurrect the bill, but sources now say Specter could have as few as 57 votes in support of the measure. Sources said the bill’s path is further obstructed because the Senate is considering immigration and pension reform. Sources said that little progress had been made on the bills and that work on them could continue until Memorial Day. Medical criteria legislation is likewise stuck. Sen. By Michael Giannulis So youve started youre new way of eating! Congratulations. Perhaps you dont always eat the right foods, but each week you make a conscious effort to adjust your eating behavior. You have realized that progress is better than perfection. If you havent quite got it yet, hang in there, itll happen. These next five steps are going be a big help! 6) Commit to the Long Haul. If you havent already done so, you need to commit in your mind that you are going to stick to this new life forever. Its the new you and it makes you happy. When you were eating whatever you wanted were you happy? So how can giving up and eating those old nasty foods that led you to where you were be a good thing? Commit to the long haul and you will learn the greatest secret to success with weight loss. (And anything else for that matter) * When Failure is not an option, success is inevitable. When you grasp that, you begin to see that your weight loss adventure is a journey through hills, valleys, trees, mountains, and even past a few doughnut shops, but it will work out as long as you keep on walking. If you think you cant afford a gym you can at least begin by jumping rope, walking around the block, always taking the stairs, jumping on a trampoline, etc. Doing anything is better than doing nothing. 8) Dont Be Afraid To Eat Out. If you ate out before you began your new eating habits, odds are youll still want to eat out. So whats the best thing to do? Keep on eating out by all means! If you dont youll never make it. When you go out opt for salads, chicken, and no fried foods. I didnt say it was gonna be easy, but it is very possible. When I eat out I usually have Caesar salads, fajitas with no tortilla, pizza toppings, chicken breast, and other fine low Carb foods. I made sure I could eat foods I like when I picked my new eating style, so make sure you do the same! 9) Find A Partner Everything is easier when you have someone else helping you. Find someone to join you in your eating plan and find someone to go to the gym with you, or to go with you on a walk. Its much better to have someone else you can talk to and that can hold you accountable. You and your accountability partner can keep each other in check and if either of you is feeling down, you can inspire each other by your actions and positive words. 10) Grow As You Go, or Die If You Dont Try. Always remember its a gradual process. Getting to your goal weight will happen when you commit to it happening. If you wont quit, then eventually, no matter what, you will see that magical number on the scale youve been aiming for. Dont get discouraged! See each day as a new opportunity to work towards your goal. When you weigh in each week, take into account muscle mass, water, and what time of day you weigh. Its best to weigh in wearing the same clothes at the same time on the same day of the week. No matter what happens from week to week, promise yourself youre going to keep on going. Success comes to those who dont see failure as an option. Your weight each week isnt a sign of success or failure, its only a tool for determining what to change, keep, or fix. The best sign of weight loss is your clothes. As you stay with your new eating plan, your clothes will feel looser. So look forward to buying new clothes! By David McCormick Understanding the theory of adaptation (see previous article, Adaptation I) will give you the tools to evaluate your diet and daily routine. If you have any question about whether something is good for you, always examine both the immediate effects and the adaptation effects equally. This article will look at various examples of adaptation and practical advice based on this important theory. Walking Is walking for a long time a good way of losing weight? Look at it this way: the direct effect is that calories are burnt over that period, and you will by using your fat stores for fuel because it is aerobic exercise. So that’s a positive: you’re burning calories, and as long as you don’t eat too much food, you’re losing weight. But what will be the adaptation? You’re telling your body that you will need to walk for a long amount of time to find food. So, how will your body adapt to make you a better walker? Expending energy faster? Burning fat easily? NO WAY. If you need to walk through the savanna for a long time, you want your body to conserve as much energy (fat) as possible and retain as much water as possible. This is the opposite of your goal, you will not lose weight in the long-term, so it is not an optimal solution. Sprinting What about high-intensity exercise? The immediate effect is to burn calories in your blood, but there isn’t enough time to start burning fat. Your muscles may burn with lactic acid, and you can’t keep it up for very long. That isn’t too good, because you won’t burn as many calories as you did walking. But is the adaptation going in the correct direction? Your body will try to make you a better runner by making calories available to you at a moment’s notice to fuel your run (burning fat faster), and will try to get rid of the fat that is slowing you down. This is a great adaptation. The best advice regarding exercise for weight loss in accordance with adaptation is this: warm up by doing a fast walk for 10-15 minutes, so that your body goes into a fat-burning mode. Then, turn up the intensity as high as you can and speed through the next 10-15 minutes. This can be running, climbing stairs, bicycling or whatever activity you like. I recommend a stationary bike because the risk of falling or hurting your joints is minimized. If you do this before breakfast, you’re also training your body to use stored energy (fat) instead of energy from food in your stomach. If You Could Be an Animal… If your physique could resemble an animal’s, which animal would you choose? Try to ignore symbolism, and just pick an animal whose body composition you’d like to approach. Many men would choose a lion and many women would choose a gazelle. These animals have adapted to get the bodies they have, and their adaptation, like yours, is based on how they behave day to day. So how do these animals behave? We can’t compare their diets, because a gazelle is a herbivore, a lion is a carnivore, and humans are omnivores. However, we can look at their exercise needs. A lion, to get food, has to sprint for up to 5 minutes until it grabs its prey, which is usually pretty big. When it does, it wrestles with it for up to 10 minutes, flexing all its muscles and changing positions, putting all its force against the other animal that is resisting with all its might. This builds muscular strength and size and eliminates body fat. A gazelle spends a lot of time eating, but each mouthful is tiny. It takes a long time to eat, and never gorges. When the grass all around it is bare, it bounces off to another place to find food or water. The gazelle is highly alert because it is vulnerable to attack, and often twitches or fidgets to make sure it can escape quickly. When it is attacked, it runs (bounces) incredibly fast for up to 20 minutes until it is safely out of danger. This activity makes it long and slender as an adaptation to its environment. Don’t be a house cat. Many cats are overweight because their environment doesn’t challenge them to run to catch food (or avoid being caught), and sleep or lie around for 18 hours a day. If you have a desk-job, and then watch TV on the couch, that is exactly what you are doing. Three Squares Should you eat only three meals a day and avoid snacking to lose weight? Well, you will be consuming fewer calories, so that’s a plus. However, the bigger effect is this: your body will think food is rare and that you may starve. If you go 5 or 6 hours between meals, or if you skip breakfast and go 16 hours or so without food, what else could your body possibly conclude? Your brain can’t tell your cells “don’t worry, we’re trying to lose weight,” because your intentions don’t mean anything to your organs. Your organs react and adapt to the stimuli presented to them. So they think that you’re in the desert. How do you survive in the desert? Like a camel: Conserve as much food in your body as possible (fat), slow your metabolism to prolong your life (so you’ll feel tired a lot), and retain as much water as possible. What about the opposite? What if you eat small portions every two hours and drink water all the time? Your body will think that you’re in a place where there is food whenever you need it, like a jungle full of fruit trees and other easily furnished food to eat. What is the reaction? Hooray! Better to speed up the metabolism, so that the stomach is finished digesting the previous meal before the next one comes; no need to store fat that is just leeching circulation and water; and get rid of any excess water in the system, because fresh water is constantly coming in. This is in line with your weight loss goals, so this is the route to take. Calories: Eat less or burn more? The final effect of your body’s great adaptation potential is the question of which is more effective: eating fewer calories or burning more calories with exercise? Let’s look at these two propositions in terms of adaptation. If you first remove a significant number of calories from your diet, you will feel less energetic (because calories are energy), therefore, you won’t feel like exercising, and you won’t be able to exercise for as long. On the other hand, if you start exercising more each day, it will make you hungrier (because your body knows it’s not getting enough calories to support this new activity), but as long as you try to keep your eating habits the same and pay attention to satiety by eating foods that make you feel full, you’ll feel great, your endurance will improve and your overall health will keep getting better. At that point, if you reduce the calories in your diet, then you will be able to cope with slightly less energy, because your body will already be more efficient at using that energy to fuel your exercise. A Summary To conclude, in terms of exercise: warm up to get the circulation going with a fast walk for about 20 minutes, then do a high intensity activity for about 10 minutes. The best to do that is before breakfast. In terms of diet: try to reduce your calories overall, but divide them among small meals all day. Never eat a big meal, but snack every hour or two on something healthy. Also, drink as much water as you possibly can all day. These practices are optimized for your body’s natural reactions, so that you will be training your body to lose weight. People who are in a relationship often stand as support systems for one another and share each other’s problems and strive together to build a better life and future. However, there is the other side to love, where instead of bringing you happiness, it could be the worse thing in your life. An abusive relationship can affect an individual’s mental and physical well-being. Abusive relationships are not always physical in nature but can even be mental or emotional. If you feel you are in a relationship where you are being abused in any way - physically or emotionally, read on for tips on how to deal with the unfortunate situation: How to get out of an abusive relationship? Confide Many people who are in an abusive relationship do not seek help because they are afraid of social pressures or are scared of their partner. But as long as you don’t let someone know that you are suffering, you might never find a way out. If your partner is abusive towards you, talk to someone whom you trust and let them know about your strife. A close friend or family member can share in your sorrow and even help you get out of the relationship. There is no point making yourself suffer because you fear losing your partner or what society might think. In fact, maybe your partner should also get help or go for counseling. But the first step is to accept it and let someone know. Back up After you have confided in someone about your problem, make a plan to get yourself out of the situation. You could confront your partner (if you are afraid to do this alone, take someone with you), and move out of the house and start with giving yourself and him or her some alone time. This will help you figure out what you need to do next. Tell your partner things need to change and try to build your life so you don’t have to depend on your partner both financially or emotionally. Get Help If you don’t have friends and family or are too afraid to go to them then get professional help. Seek out institutes or a counsellors and ask them to help you with your situation. If your partner is beyond help and it is impossible to talk to him or her without the threat that they might hurt you, report them to the authorities in order to ensure your safety. But make sure your safety is your first priority. Its better to safe than sorry. You are just doing this for your self defense and there is nothing wrong in thinking about your good and getting rid of such a relation. Sometimes the abusive partner might not understand that you need to leave and might threaten you or force you stay with them. But you must find a way to get away from this person at any cost for your own sake. Worst Case Scenario If you feel that none of the above will work, and if your partner is abusive to the extent that you might think your life is in danger, inform the cops. There is no point trying to sort things our or being careful about things when your life is in danger. Sometimes abusive people need their victims to be around them because it is the victims who give them a sense of power. Therefore, as ironic as it may sound, they need their victims and will do anything to make sure that they do not lose the abused. Which is why there is a chance that if you tell this person you won’t take their abuse any longer and want to leave, they might do anything to hold you back and in the process cause some serious harm. So if you feel like this person is a threat to your life, immediately call the police. The Children If you have been in this relationship long and share children with the abusive partner, then you need to look out for yourself and your children. Do not let the abusive partner blackmail you with your children. You cannot stay with an abusive person, simply because you share a child with him or her. Besides, your child will probably be better off without the constant abuse and if the abusive partner reforms and changes their ways you can always go back. Act as fast as you can before its too late. You have to be strong and take hold of your life. Being in such a relation can destroy your happiness. You have a right to be happy, so if you are in an abusive relationship, get help and do yourself some justice. It is your life and you deserve to be happy, so start making changes now!
